Book Review #8: Your Next Five Moves – Master the Art of Business Strategy
GRADE: A+
Wow, do I adore this book. A full appreciation of this book goes hand in hand with an appreciation of it’s author, Patrick Bet-David. A self-made person who made his fortune in the insurance industry. However, other than in passing mention – we won’t be doing a deep diving into the workings of the insurance world.
Instead what we get is a masterful devulgance of the strategies and philosophies that Patrick has learned through his years as not only the owner of a 9-figure company, but also a podcast host who pulls from the world’s of competitive business (see interview with Ray Dalio), competitive sports (see interview with Kobe Bryant), strategic marketing (see interview with Jonah Berger) mob strategies (see interview with Michael Franzese), and philosphy (he dedicated the book to ‘the Aristotle of [his] life.’
Whereas most ‘keys to success’ genre books are vague, generic, and repetitive. Five Moves is remarkably actionable, succinct, and interesting. Bet-David is able to tersely glean commonalities and learning points from a wide range of fantastic empiracle stories and distill them down into something useful for the reader.
Five Moves presents a somewhat misleading title in its reference to ‘business success.’ In reality, the book guides the reader along a journey to a successful and fulfilled life. Which, for most business owners, is hinged upon the success and growth of the business. We our reminded that as business owners, our lives revolve around the business — but the business revolves around US.
For our lives to be great, our businesses must be great. But for our businesses to be great, we must be great.
